So Beautiful, So What

We saw Paul Simon at the Gibson Ampitheatre at Universal Studios last week. He and his excellent, multi-talented band performed about 25 songs, including several from his new album, "So Beautiful, So What." I'll never get tired of seeing him. He just turned 70 years old!

Yesterday we saw the Capitol Steps perform their political satire. They put the "mock" in "Democracy." It was non-stop laughter for 1 1/2 hours. Then we went to an authentic hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant. There was a line out the door and 90% of the patrons were Chinese. Interesting food. Fun times.

A tiny visitor

I'm in the throes of an autumn cold. Sinus congestion, coughing, headachy, etc. Yuck. A couple of weeks ago, I had a little visitor for 5 days. She's 4 months old now. Look at us:

I've been a bit overwhelmed with work lately, but I like raking in the cash. I work for various agencies so it's fun to get a check from one of them every few days.

I'm still trying to decide which of the new fall TV shows I like. I'm not thrilled with any of the new sitcoms, but I'm giving them a chance.

We removed the old wallpaper from our bedroom and bathroom and gave them a shiny new paint job and crown moulding. We're not crazy about the bathroom color so we may re-paint it the same color as the bedroom.

Our next trip will be in February.....drum roll please....

We're going to Machu Pichu and the Galapagos Islands. I've been wanting to go there for a long time and I'm so excited. I had to find a new house and cat sitter and I found the 24-year old daughter of a long-time acquaintance. She recently broke up with her live-in boyfriend and moved back home so I'm sure she wants to get out of her parents' house for a couple of weeks.

ETA: I'm going to Bill Clinton's "A Decade of Difference" concert at the Hollywood Bowl on Saturday night. It supports his Clinton Foundation. The stated mission of the Clinton Foundation is to "strengthen the capacity of people throughout the world to meet the challenges of global interdependence." The most expensive tickets are $25,000 a couple for both the Hollywood Bowl event and Clinton's 65th birthday party on Friday night. Performers include Lady Gaga, Bono and the Edge, Usher, Kenny Chesney and perhaps some other special guests. Chelsea Clinton is the honorary chairperson, so I suppose that Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea will be there, too. I'm bringing my binoculars so I can spot all the celebs in the audience.

Let's keep blogging!

6 degrees of separation

I've been doing home health speech therapy just on the other side of the fence of CBS Studios, where the Big Brother house is located. I can almost touch them, not that I'd want to.

The U.S. Wipeout TV show is filmed about 20 minutes from my home, in the same town. I don't know why I didn't know this before...If you google wipeout location, you can see the google satellite map of the various pools and action sites. All the other Wipeout shows are filmed in Argentina.

All the wallpaper has been removed from my bedroom and bathroom. We've painted big blotches of various paint on the walls to see what we like. We've moved into the kids' bedroom and bathroom. Me not likey. Now I know how cramped it'll be when we downsize. Oh, everyone tells me that wallpaper is making a comeback.

As I was saying...

I'm on the back-to-blogging bandwagon. Let's get this thing started again.

This has been an eventful summer.

Just call me GRANDMA!

We spent 10 days with the baby and keep in contact via skype. I'm lovin' it!

Our air conditioner broke down and we needed a new one...$$%&$# later and it's so cool, literally and figuratively. We're also re-doing our bedroom, dressing room, and bathroom. We're leaving the 80's behind and removing the boxes of fluorescent lights on the ceiling and going for recessed cans. We're removing the wallpaper and trying to decide on paint. It's so difficult to make changes.

We saw Hall and Oates at the Hollywood Bowl a few weeks ago. Wednesday night, we were asked to sit in a friend's BOX SEATS for the James Ingram and Gladys Knight concert. It was like a mini-vacation.

We have something called Screaming Daily Deals (similar to Groupon). We bought a weekend at a B & B in Big Bear. We go in a few weeks. I'm soooo looking forward to it. Speaking of vacations, we made reservations for a trip to Machu Pichu and the Galapagos Islands for February.

For the first time ever, Cleo the cat didn't come up to bed with us when it was bedtime. That rat stayed downstairs on the comfy couch until I went down to carry her upstairs around 3 am. I think I get a better night's sleep when she's not there spooning with me, but I still want her around. When the A/C wasn't working, she went upstairs and slept on top of the armoire, the highest and hottest point of the house. She'd be there all day. Now that the A/C is working, she's back on the couch or searching for sun spots on the carpet. Why do cats like to be hot?

Good enough update?

Since you asked, here's another picture of Hannah at 8 weeks:

Put a little Greece on that Turkey

...and we're off!

On Wednesday, we leave for a 2-week trip to Greece and Turkey. Our itinery includes: Athens, Kalambaka (Meteora), and Delphi. Then we board a 50-passenger ship for the islands of Syros, Mykonos, Delos, Naxos, Santorini, Amorgos, and Patmos. We disembark in Kusadasi, Turkey, explore the ruins of Ephesus and fly to Istanbul for a couple of days.

All our bags are packed, we're ready to go...

Valentine's Day

There's a new restaurant in town. It's a little pricey, but we had a "Screamin Daily Deal" for it. Screamin Daily Deals are similar to Groupon. We bought $40 worth of food for $20. This is what I wrote in an email to the restaurant and on Yelp.com which posts reviews and recommendations of businesses. This is the first time I've ever posted on Yelp or written to a business.

We had a Saturday night 7:15 reservation, made one week in advance. We were brought outside to the patio, on a cold February night, to sit at the furthest table, next to open-air panels. It was freezing. We asked the hostess if we could have another table. She said that all the indoor tables were booked, but she would check on another table on the patio, which was not next to the open air. She never returned so we took ourselves to another outside table and brought our menus with us. We asked about the live music, which was listed on the restaurant's website as starting at 8 pm. We thought that a 7:15 reservation would place us in the restaurant during the live music, which we wanted to hear. The hostess said the music doesn't start until 9 pm.

We were disappointed that there was no kind of salad on the limited menu. Our first "starter" came fine and it tasted good. It took so long for our second "starter" to come, that we ordered more wine to have with our next dish. Finally, after about 1/2 hour, our second starter came, but the wine didn't arrive until we were almost done with the starter. We had to stop a server and call her/him over each time we wanted water (which was always warm).

Because we had already been at the restaurant for 1 and 1/2 hours and had only been served 2 starters, we decided to order dessert. After waiting for dessert for 25 minutes, we asked to cancel the order and asked for our check. The waiter said he'd call over the manager. After 15 more minutes, the manager never came, the dessert never came and the check never came. So we were at the restaurant for 2 and 1/2 hours. By now it was 9:30 and the live music, which was listed on the website as starting at 8 pm, still hadn't begun.

I believe that the owners or managers (especially of a new restaurant) should greet the customers, "work the room" by coming to their tables to see how things are going, and be readily available if a problem exists. When we finally spoke to the owner when we left, she said that she had been aware of our problem. Therefore, she should have approached us while we were still at our table instead of waiting for us to track her down when we left.

The entire experience was unpleasant. We were nice and accomodating while we were in the restaurant until we were leaving. At that point, I plopped the Daily Deal that I had printed up, in the owner's hand and told her, "this should cover it."

Inboxes and Trader Joes

All the emails in my inbox from July 27 to the present have been deleted. They're gone. We've tried everything to restore them and can't do it. I delete, delete, delete and can never seem to catch up to reducing the size of my outlook express. Well, the computer did 6 month's worth for me. I can't remember what was in there, but I do know that the most important email was a video of my daughter's baby's ultrasound.

My favorite items at Trader Joe's are:
1. Their own brand of Pirate's Booty
2. Two-buck Chuck wine
3. TJ's frozen tempura shrimp
4. TJ's 100 calorie 70% dark chocolate bars
5. Mintz's tofutti blintzes
6. TJ's frozen cioppino
7. Trader Ming's frozen Mandarin orange chicken
8. Trader Joe San's tempura chicken
9. TJ's Quinoa (haven't tried it yet, but it's the newest healthfood)
10. Flatbread
11. Jar of marinated red and yellow peppers that I combine with a slice of their inexpensive goat cheese to make a brushetta-type of hors d-oeuvres.
12. So many more that I can't think of right now.

We have a new market here called Sprout's. They have lots of great produce specials and bulk granola. It's right next to the new Buy Buy Baby store, which is owned by Bed Bath and Beyond. It's set up the same way and has merchandise from top to bottom. They're both in the same shopping center as Target which had clearance prices of 50-75% off on baby items, including major items. You can see that I have "baby" on the brain.
